Smyrna First United Methodist Church wants to make a real difference - in your spiritual life, in your relationships, and in the city and world.
Frequently Asked Questions:
When can I join?
*Any Sunday during Worship. At the end of each worship service, you will be invited to join our church by coming forward during the last hymn. Please complete the “Joining Today!” form and bring it with you when you come forward to join.
*Any Sunday in between Worship Services by appointment. Please contact either of our pastors.
For special situations, our pastors are happy to receive new members at different times
and places by request (e.g., nursing homes, hospitals, etc.).
I’m not Methodist; can I still join Smyrna First?
Absolutely! Many people that join our church are from other faiths. If you have been baptized, we accept your baptism and your belief in Jesus Christ and warmly welcome you.
What if I have not been baptized?
For adults who have not been baptized, but would like to join Smyrna First UMC, we’d love to help you take this important step. If you confess Jesus Christ as your Savior, put your whole trust in His grace, and desire to serve Him as your Lord as part of the church, we invite you to be part of a brief ceremony of this outward sign of God’s inward love for us. Although it is so affirming to all of us when adults step forward during the service to accept the gift of God’s grace, if you prefer, we can arrange for your baptism with a smaller group at another time. Contact Loyd Mabry at 459-2826.
Where can I learn more about Smyrna First’s beliefs?
We offer a New Member class, which is especially for new members and prospective members. Here you’ll meet staff members, develop new friendships and learn about Smyrna First’s mission and vision. For more information call the church office, 459-2826.
Do I have to attend a class to join Smyrna First?
We invite all members to attend our New Member class. While it is helpful to take this class before joining, you can wait until after you’ve joined to attend. The only prerequisite for joining our church is your belief in Jesus Christ and your willingness to support the church with your membership vows.
What is expected of me when I join?
We hope all will attend the New Member class either before joining or soon after. In addition to supporting the church with your vows, we want our members to support our vision, which is “to make a difference...in spiritual lives, in relationships, and in the city and world.”
What are the membership vows?
1. Do you accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, and pledge your allegiance to His kingdom?
2. Do you profess the Christian Faith as contained in the Old and New Testaments as your rule of faith and practice?
3. Will you, according to the grace given you, live a Christian life?
If you make these vows your solemn promise, then you are eligible to take
this final vow of membership to Smyrna First United Methodist Church;
4. Will you be loyal to Smyrna First United Methodist Church, and uphold it with your
prayers, your presence, your gifts, your service, and your witness?
