In the older youth group (7th - 12th), Invasion, we have been spending our time getting to know each other. New directions are being discussed and the Invasion group is getting geared up.
At Smyrna First UMC, we will be offering Confirmation classes for youth who are in sixth grade and above. You will notice that Confirmation has the word "firm" in it. Confirmation is a time when you have the opportunity to make a firm decision whether you will claim the name "Christian" for yourself and whether you will offer your prayers, presence, gifts and service as a member of The United Methodist Church. This class is a model program for bringing youth into full connection with the church. It is a ten-month learning process, beginning in August and ending in May 2011. Youth participate with adult mentors in bi-weekly class sessions.
Working with an adult mentor, as well as through active learning experiences in class, youth will learn about what it means to be a disciple of Jesus Christ, the Christian life, worship, service, church history, and tradition, the use of scripture, and the meaning of church membership. In addition, special activities are planned including service projects and a retreat at Lake Junaluska Assembly Grounds. The class concludes on Confirmation Sunday, where the confirmands are given an opportunity to make a profession of faith in accepting Christ as their Lord and Savior, and becoming a professing member of Smyrna First.
If you wish your son/daughter to be part of the Confirmation Journey, please call Felicia Kumar at 459-2826, extension 13 or email her at felicia.kumar@smyrnafirstumc.org.
